Six Priorities in an Emergency Situation

In any emergency situation, we only have a few moments to respond. How we respond can be the difference between life and death. But what should you do if you find yourself in a position where you have to respond quickly. What would you do? Let’s discuss six priorities in an emergency situation that we need to remember.

What Should We Do in an Emergency Situation?

  1. Stop to assess the situation.
  2. Make sure it is safe to approach the scene.
  3. Make the area safe.
  4. Assess the victim.
  5. Call for help.
  6. Resuscitate and treat injuries as necessary.

Let’s take a moment to discuss each of the steps listed above.

The first thing we should be is to access the situation. After an emergency, our first inclination is to take immediately action. However, taking immediate action can put us and the victim in more danger. So take a moment, look around. For instance, in the case of a car accident, is there oncoming traffic? Is there broken place? Is there leaking few? These vital seconds spent will put us in the best position to help.

The next thing is to make sure it is safe to approach. Like the first step, there can still be dangers that we have to be mindful of. We wouldn’t want to put ourselves at risk. If we are unable to approach safely, that might be the time to call out to see if others are in a better position or to call for help.

Take Action

Now that we have accessed the situation and checked for safety, it’s time to take action. The next thing on the list is make the area safe if it isn’t already. Again, only do what you can and avoid putting yourself at risk. An example of making the area safe would include using cones to get people away from an area, lights so that people can see, etc.

Now we get to our fourth step – help the victim. Check to see if they are responsive and okay. If there are injuries and no present danger, it might be best to wait until professional help arrives. However, access the injuries and if needed call for help. If there is a need to perform CPR or any other life saving procedures where time is of the essence, do so.

Be Prepared

While it is impossible to be prepared for every situation, we can take steps to take decisive action. Following these steps puts us in a position to help. Additionally, having emergency supplies near by will further help.
